September: NFL kickoff, baseball's stretch run, Panini out
September is the busiest month on the card calendar. The NFL regular season kicks off Wednesday, September 9 with a Super Bowl 60 rematch, Patriots at Seahawks, and hobby attention swings hard toward football the moment real games return. At the same time baseball's pennant races tighten into the final week, with the Wild Card round starting September 29 — a natural window to buy the aces and stars before October narratives inflate them.
On the basketball side, September is the pre-hype ramp before the 2026-27 season: training camps, media days, and the first sophomore storylines. The biggest of those is Cooper Flagg — the reigning Rookie of the Year — heading into year two in Dallas with Kyrie Irving returning from an ACL, which is why his newly licensed Topps rookie autos anchor the top of this list. Topps Chrome Update Basketball (August 6) and the fully NBA-licensed Topps Motif Basketball (around August 20) carry his most-chased parallels and the first NBA Logoman 1/1 autos of his class.
Underneath all of it, the modern market is still being reshaped by one thing: Panini lost both major licenses. The NBA moved to Fanatics and Topps in October 2025 and the NFL followed in spring 2026, so Panini's newest NBA and NFL products are unlicensed and airbrushed. That hardens the value of the last fully licensed Panini rookies — the National Treasures RPAs and Prizm refractors that make up much of our Conviction and Core tiers — because no new licensed Panini rookie patch autos will ever be printed. On the football side, 2025 Topps Chrome produced the first-ever licensed Topps NFL rookie patch autos, which now set the reference prices for the 2025 class.

Starter (under $50) is where a first-time buyer should begin — real, liquid cards of the same stars featured higher up. Budget ($50–$150) is our watcher's sweet spot: serial-numbered rookie patch autos of ascending players with a hard supply cap. Core ($150–$1,000) steps up to true RPAs of established young stars.
