The 40 Best Sports Cards to Buy in August 2026, by Budget
By Ripbin Research · Updated 2026-08-13 · comps from live eBay market data
Cooper Flagg is the single biggest mover in the hobby this month, but the smarter money is in the tiers beneath him. This is Ripbin's first four-tier report — 10 cards each under $50, $50–$150, $150–$1,000 and $1,000+ — every price drawn from live August 2026 eBay comps and our daily rookie-card watcher, against a market being reshaped by Panini losing both the NBA and NFL licenses to Fanatics and Topps.

Affiliate — we may earn a commissionEvery month we publish the cards our research flags as most likely to appreciate. This August edition is our first built as four budget bands — a Starter tier under $50, a Budget tier from $50 to $150, a Core tier from $150 to $1,000, and a Conviction tier above $1,000 — with ten picks in each so there is a real buy list no matter what you have to spend.
The prices are not guesses. Core and Budget picks come from Ripbin's daily monitor of raw (ungraded) eBay listings for serial-numbered rookie patch and auto cards, with outlier-trimmed comps. Conviction picks come from fresh August market research across eBay sold, Card Ladder and Sports Card Investor. Starter picks are real market values from our catalog. Where a comp is thin or a few weeks old, we say so and give a range.
The macro story: Panini out, Topps in
The whole modern market is being reshaped by one thing: Panini lost both major licenses. The NBA moved to Fanatics/Topps in October 2025 and the NFL followed in spring 2026, so Panini's 2025-26 NBA and 2025 NFL products are now unlicensed and airbrushed — the first NBA-license-less Prizm shipped July 31, 2026. That makes the last licensed National Treasures (2024-25 NBA, 2025 NFL) a live 'final edition' scarcity story, though a tempered one, because Fanatics has been signing rookies to exclusives that pull them out of Panini checklists entirely.
The near-term catalysts are the new Topps products: Topps Chrome Update Basketball (Aug 6) carries Cooper Flagg's most-chased Chrome parallels, and the fully NBA-licensed Topps Motif Basketball lands around Aug 20. That is why Flagg's flagship serial cards sit at the top of this list — the 'real' licensed rookie patch autos are only now appearing, and they pull the whole complex up with them.
How to use the four tiers
Starter (under $50) is where a first-time buyer should begin — real, liquid base cards of the same stars featured higher up. Budget ($50–$150) is our watcher's sweet spot: serial-numbered rookie patch autos of ascending players with a hard supply cap. Core ($150–$1,000) steps up to true RPAs of established young stars. Conviction ($1,000+) is the blue-chip and grail tier — buy fewer, hold longer.
Starter tier (under $50)
#31Anthony Edwards — 2020 Chronicles #339
~$47~$47 (Aug 2026 catalog value)The cheapest way into the Ant market — same superstar, none of the RPA premium. A liquid base card for a first-time buyer.

- ▼Base-card supply caps the appreciation slope.
#33Caleb Williams — 2024 Prizm #301

- ▼A second disappointing season keeps a beaten-down market soft.

- ▲Elite volume and efficiency in Atlanta.
- ▲RB1 usage keeps casual demand high.
- ▼RB markets decay with the player's legs — a 3–5 year hold, not forever.
#35Paul Skenes — 2024 Bowman Chrome Prospects (base)
~$46~$46 (Aug 2026 catalog value)The base Bowman Chrome of the hobby's most valuable young arm — the cheapest ticket onto a Cy-Young trajectory.
- ▲A 2026 Cy Young run spikes all Skenes cards.
- ▲Bowman Chrome is the reference baseball prospect brand.
- ▼Pitcher injury risk overhangs the entire Skenes market.
#36Travis Hunter — 2025 Phoenix Archetype
~$45~$45 (Aug 2026 catalog value)A sub-$50 entry into the class's most-hyped two-way unicorn — the affordable side of the final-NT story.
- ▲Two-way usage keeps him a national storyline.
- ▲Class-leading card demand.
- ▼LCL surgery and a two-way workload are durability questions.
#37Jayden Daniels — 2024 Donruss #389
~$43~$43 (Aug 2026 catalog value)The base rookie of the OROY-winning dual-threat QB — the cheapest way to own the best of the 2024 QB class.
- ▲A continued franchise-QB trajectory in Washington.
- ▲Base Donruss is a high-liquidity entry.
- ▼Injury durability is the open question on his whole market.
#38Jalen Williams — 2022 Donruss Optic #235

- ▲Thunder title contention and a Williams All-Star nod.
- ▲Optic is a liquid, gradeable base.
- ▼A secondary-star ceiling behind SGA.
#39Cade Cunningham — 2021 Prizm #282

- ▲MVP buzz amplifies volume across all his cards.
- ▲The Pistons' return to relevance.
- ▼A momentum-driven market that reverses if Detroit stalls.
#40Ja'Marr Chase — 2021 Spectra #147
~$37~$37 (Aug 2026 catalog value)A sub-$40 Spectra of a top-five WR1 — the starter entry beneath his $1.7k NT RPA.
- ▲Elite target share in Cincinnati's passing offense.
- ▲A fixed, thinning modern-WR base supply.
- ▼WR base appreciates slower than QB cards and is Burrow-dependent.
Budget tier ($50–$150)
#21Amen Thompson — 2023-24 Obsidian Rookie Jersey Auto /99
~$142~$100–142 /99 (2026)The best athlete of his class posting career highs (18.3/7.8/5.3) as lead guard next to Durant — a /99 patch auto under ~$140 with an All-Defense floor.
- ▲Career-high production as Houston's lead guard.
- ▲An All-Defense-caliber floor limits the downside.
- ▼Jump-shot development is the swing factor on his ceiling.
#22Collin Murray-Boyles — 2025-26 Topps Midnight Rookie Jersey Auto
~$140~$13–26 base, ~$140 patch auto (2026)A first-Topps-era patch auto of an All-Rookie 2nd Team player, on the same shelf as the class's headliners at a fraction of the price.
- ▲The first Topps-era NBA product becomes the class's reference set.
- ▲An All-Rookie nod that the comps predate.
- ▼No scoring gravity yet — a pure flier, sized like one.
#23Zach Edey — 2024-25 Immaculate RPA /99
~$137~$70–137 /99 (2026)An on-card RPA /99 from the final Immaculate, under ~$137, for a 7-foot-4 All-Rookie center posting 13.6/11.1 before ankle surgery. The market is pricing the ankle, not the production.
- ▲A healthy return to double-double production.
- ▲Final-Immaculate terminal scarcity.
- ▼Center is a discounted hobby position and the ankle is a live question.
#24Derik Queen — 2025-26 Topps Midnight Rookie Jersey Auto
~$136~$136 patch auto (2026)An All-Rookie 2nd Team lottery big with elite touch and passing; sub-$150 is option pricing on a potential year-2 leap.
- ▲A year-2 leap is a 5–10x on this base.
- ▲Elite passing for a big is a scarce, sticky skill.
- ▼Conditioning and the center discount are the risks.
#25Jalen Duren — 2022-23 Spectra RPA /199
~$135~$70–134 /199 (2026)A 22-year-old who just made All-NBA 3rd Team as the starting center of a 60-win contender — at ~$70–134. The cheapest All-NBA RPA in the hobby.
- ▲All-NBA production on a contender.
- ▲The center discount is the asymmetry — cheap for the résumé.
- ▼The position's hobby ceiling caps the upside multiple.
#26TreVeyon Henderson — 2025 Topps Chrome RPA /99
~$118~$118 /99 (2026), +72% in 30 daysOROY runner-up and All-Rookie RB in the Drake Maye offense, in what becomes this class's reference RPA set.
- ▲Lead-back usage in an improving Patriots offense.
- ▲The first Topps Chrome NFL RPA set as the class benchmark.
- ▼RB card markets decay with the player's legs — treat as a 3–5 year momentum hold.
#27Trey McBride — 2022 Spectra RPA /125
~$110~$45 → $82 → $110 /125 (2026, trending up)An All-Pro TE (49 of 50 first-place votes) whose /125 RPA trades at kicker prices and is already trending up. Kelce and Gronk showed the TE re-rate path.
- ▲Continued target share and All-Pro production.
- ▲A historically under-priced position beginning to re-rate.
- ▼TE is a slow-moving hobby position — patience required.
#28Brock Bowers — 2024 National Treasures Rookie Patch /99
~$80~$80 /99 (2026)A deep-value flyer — a record-pace TE at a knee-injury discount, patch-only /99.
- ▲A healthy season of record TE production.
- ▲Patch-only /99 keeps the float thin.
- ▼The TE hobby ceiling is the structural cap (the Kyle Pitts memorial risk).
#29Malik Nabers — 2024 National Treasures Rookie Patch /99
~$76~$30–76 /99 (2026)An ACL lottery ticket at ~$30–76. If he returns to 2024 form with Dart throwing to him, this multiplies; if not, the loss is capped at lunch money.
- ▲A full recovery reuniting him with a rising Giants QB.
- ▲WR1 target share in New York.
- ▼Coming off an ACL — the return timeline and form are unproven.
#30Kyle Hamilton — 2022 Limited RPA /199
~$59~$25–80 /199 (2026)First-Team All-Pro in 2025, arguably the best safety alive, at true option pricing. The lowest player-risk name in the budget file — the position's hobby ceiling is the whole bet.
- ▲Sustained All-Pro production.
- ▲A defensive-back re-rate if the market ever warms to the position.
- ▼Safety is the most discounted hobby position — the ceiling is capped by category, not talent.
Core tier ($150–$1,000)
#11Jaxson Dart — 2025 Topps Chrome Rookie Patch Auto
~$972~$972 (Aug 2026 comp)The first-ever licensed Topps NFL RPA of a 24-touchdown rookie New York quarterback — his non-auto NT Shield 1/1 sold $79.3k in June 2026.
- ▲A starting role in the New York market turns casual attention into card demand.
- ▲The first licensed Topps NFL RPA set becomes the class's reference product.
- ▼Rookie-QB volatility, redemption risk, and new-product froth all cut against a clean entry.
#12Jayden Daniels — 2024 National Treasures Rookie Patch /99
~$700~$700 raw /99 (2026)The OROY-winning dual-threat QB at a 35–45% injury discount to the Maye and Caleb patch equivalents. Buy the elbow-injury dip if you believe it was a fluke, not a durability pattern.
- ▲A healthy, productive year-2 in a rebuilt Washington offense closes the discount to his peers.
- ▲Patch-only /99 supply is fixed and thinning as copies grade out.
- ▼No autograph caps the ceiling versus a true RPA, and the injury question is unresolved.
#13Drake Maye — 2024 Topps Resurgence RPA
~$648~$649 (2026)The cheapest true patch-plus-auto of a near-MVP-trajectory QB — his only pack-pulled patch-auto category. The product prestige is the drag; the player is the thesis.
- ▲A Patriots step forward turns Maye into a franchise-QB card story.
- ▲Scarcity of any real Maye patch auto supports the floor.
- ▼Resurgence is a lower-prestige product than NT or Chrome, which caps how far it re-rates.
#14Scottie Barnes — 2021-22 National Treasures RPA /99
~$625~$625 raw /99 (2026)The cheapest NT RPA of a multiple-time All-Star, with all of Canada's fandom concentrated on a single player.
- ▲Any All-NBA leap re-rates a still-cheap franchise-cornerstone RPA.
- ▲A thin /99 float against a whole-country fanbase.
- ▼An offensive plateau leaves the card range-bound.
#15Micah Parsons — 2021 National Treasures RPA /99
~$599~$599 raw /99 (2026)An elite pass rusher (12.5 sacks in 2025) with generational-edge pedigree, priced down by a December ACL rehab.
- ▲A full-strength return to double-digit sacks.
- ▲Defensive-superstar scarcity in a market that under-prices the position.
- ▼Defense carries a permanent hobby discount, and the ACL recovery is unproven.
#16Matas Buzelis — 2024-25 National Treasures RPA /99
~$500~$500 raw /99 (2026)16.3 points a game at 21 as the young face of a big-market Chicago rebuild — the hobby's favorite asset class if he reaches All-Star level.
- ▲A year-2 scoring leap in a major market.
- ▲Terminal NT-brand scarcity.
- ▼Ordinary efficiency leaves him a role player and the card fades.
#17Caleb Williams — 2024 National Treasures Rookie Patch /99
~$500~$500 raw /99 (2026)Ben Johnson as head coach, a 27/7 TD-to-INT year and a playoff win at 11-6. Momentum-priced after one good year — size smaller. No Panini auto exists, so this /99 patch is the flagship.
- ▲A year-2 leap under Ben Johnson turns a #1-pick market back on.
- ▲Chicago market size amplifies any narrative.
- ▼Momentum-priced (+44% in 30 days) after a single good stretch; patch-only, no auto.
#18Jaxon Smith-Njigba — 2023 National Treasures RPA /99
~$332~$332 raw /99 (2026)Reigning OPOY and Super Bowl champ at 24, with an NFL-best 1,793 yards. A true RPA with a frozen float — holders are not selling and the card roughly 4-5x'd after the 2025 season.
- ▲Sustained WR1 production keeps the frozen float bid.
- ▲Championship pedigree broadens the buyer base.
- ▼Already re-rated hard post-2025 — you are paying up versus last year's entry.
#19Reed Sheppard — 2024-25 Immaculate RPA /99
~$300~$300 raw /99 (2026), −50% from DecemberAn on-card RPA /99 of the class's best shooter (47.5/44.4 splits, third among sophomores) bought at the bottom of his hype cycle — in the final Immaculate ever.
- ▲A larger role converts elite shooting splits into counting stats.
- ▲Terminal-brand (final Immaculate) scarcity.
- ▼Guard depth in Houston could cap his minutes and delay the breakout.
#20Travis Hunter — 2025 National Treasures RPA /99
~$297~$297 raw /99 (2026)The marquee auto of the final National Treasures Football ever printed (Panini's license ended March 2026) — a permanent scarcity story on a Heisman two-way unicorn.
- ▲The final-NT-Football terminal-set narrative.
- ▲Two-way usage keeps him a national storyline.
- ▼LCL surgery and an unprecedented two-way workload are real durability questions.
Conviction tier ($1,000+)
#1Cooper Flagg — 2025-26 Bowman Chrome Crystalized Orange Refractor /25
~$8,500~$7,800–9,100 (Apr–May 2026 eBay sold, #/25)The #1 overall pick and the single biggest story in the hobby. Until premium licensed RPAs land later in 2026, this /25 crystal refractor is his scarcest liquid flagship — and the market is treating it as the anchor of the entire Flagg complex.
- ▲Topps Chrome Update (Aug 6) and NT-tier RPAs later in 2026 pull the whole Flagg market up as the real grails finally appear.
- ▲ROY betting favorite — a strong debut season keeps casual demand red-hot.
- ▼Pre-RPA rookie hype is frothy and unproven on the court; this exact card already round-tripped $9,100 to $7,800 in a single week.
#2Victor Wembanyama — 2023-24 Prizm Silver #136 (PSA 10)
~$1,575~$1,575 PSA 10 (Card Ladder, Jan 2026); Pink Ice ~$1,995 (Jun 2026)The most valuable active-player name in the hobby. The Silver PSA 10 is the liquid, universally recognized rookie that anchors any Wemby collection — a cleaner buy than his six-figure NT RPA grail.
- ▲A first full healthy season post-injury-scare renews casual demand.
- ▲Any DPOY or MVP-ladder run, or a deep Spurs playoff push, spikes the base rookie casuals actually buy.
- ▼Injury history is the overhang — another setback caps the entire Wemby market.
#3Anthony Edwards — 2020-21 National Treasures RPA /99 (#111)
~$22,000~$22,000 raw (2025–26 aggregate; trades only a few times a year)The definitive Ant grail — on-card auto plus patch, capped at 99. An ascending superstar and the face of a contending Wolves team, with a proven high-grade ceiling north of $80k.
- ▲A deep Wolves playoff run or All-NBA nod — eBay logged roughly $3M in Edwards sales in one three-week window.
- ▲Team USA and marketability tailwinds keep broadening the buyer base.
- ▼At $20k+ it is fully exposed to macro hobby softening and to team results — a first-round exit compresses high-end demand fast.
#4Jalen Williams — 2022-23 National Treasures RPA /99 (#102)
~$3,950~$3,950 raw (2026 aggregate)A cost-controlled, ascending star and the clear #2 on a title-contending Thunder team. His /99 RPA is still cheap relative to his trajectory — asymmetric upside if he makes a leap.
- ▲Thunder title contention plus a Williams All-Star selection re-rates a still-underpriced RPA.
- ▲Continued scoring and usage growth as OKC's #2 pulls casual attention.
- ▼He is a secondary star, not the franchise face (SGA is) — a structurally lower ceiling if he plateaus.
#5Cade Cunningham — 2021-22 Prizm Draft Penmanship Gold /10 Auto (PSA 10)
~$2,100$2,100 (Feb 2026 eBay, best-offer accepted)The 2021 class alpha broke into legitimate MVP-ladder conversation and his market is in a documented comeback. The Gold /10 auto is a genuinely scarce, low-pop conviction card with a fresh 2026 comp.
- ▲MVP buzz is a proven volume amplifier for his PSA 10s.
- ▲The Pistons' return to relevance re-engages a dormant buyer base.
- ▼His market already round-tripped once (a Prizm Black 1/1 fell $167k to $70k) — momentum-driven, and it reverses hard if Detroit stalls.
#6Ja'Marr Chase — 2021 National Treasures RPA /99 (#162)
~$1,713~$1,713 raw (Aug 2026 price guide); PSA 10 well aboveA genuine on-card NT RPA /99 of a top-five-at-position WR1. It clears the $1,000 line even raw, with real graded upside.
- ▲An elite Bengals passing offense keeps him in the annual WR1 conversation.
- ▲2021 is now a fixed, thinning RPA /99 supply as copies get graded and locked away.
- ▼WR RPAs appreciate slower than QB RPAs; a Burrow injury or a Bengals down-year softens Chase demand.
#7Paul Skenes — 2024 Bowman Chrome Prospect Auto, Orange Refractor /25
~$1,375~$1,375 raw (2026); PSA 10 far higherThe most valuable young arm in the hobby, on a ROY-to-Cy-Young trajectory. The /25 orange is a low-pop color tier of his signature Bowman prospect auto — scarcity plus the first-flagship-Bowman premium.
- ▲A 2026 Cy Young run or Pirates playoff push spikes his autos the way pitcher postseason narratives do.
- ▲PSA 10 grading attrition on a /25 keeps the gem-mint pop tiny.
- ▼Pitcher injury and Tommy John risk is the single biggest overhang — one elbow event resets the curve.
#8Shohei Ohtani — 2018 Bowman Chrome Rookie Auto (PSA 10)
~$7,200~$7,200 PSA 10 (Fanatics Collect, 2026); pop ~12Three MVPs, a title, and dual Japan-plus-US demand make this a two-market blue chip. The PSA 10 has cooled to an accessible-for-a-grail ~$7k entry on a tiny 12-copy population.
- ▲Continued Dodgers contention and counting-stat milestones keep him the sport's #1 name.
- ▲A roughly 12-copy PSA 10 pop means any demand shock moves price on almost no float.
- ▼Already retraced from prior five-figure highs — a mature-player rookie can keep drifting if hobby liquidity stays soft.
#9Caitlin Clark — 2024 National Treasures WNBA RPA /49 (PSA 10)
~$19,500$19,500 PSA 10 (Feb 2026), off a ~$27,840 Aug-2025 highClark is the singular demand engine of the entire women's-sports card market. A low-numbered on-card RPA is the scarce patch-plus-signature centerpiece institutional and set collectors target.
- ▲Any WNBA MVP or championship run, or continued attendance and TV records, keeps her the face of an under-monetized category.
- ▲The women's market is early — new high-net-worth entrants pull up the whole /10 to /49 RPA tier.
- ▼Prices are already retracing off 2025 peaks (this RPA down ~30% year-over-year) and WNBA liquidity is thin — exits can be slow at these levels.
#10Caitlin Clark — 2024 Select WNBA Gold Prizm RPA /10 (PSA 10, POP 1)
~$24,500$24,500 PSA 10 (Feb 2026), was ~$28,060 in 2025A POP-1 /10 on-card RPA of the category's only true demand engine — maximum scarcity in the fastest-narrative segment of the hobby.
- ▲The same Clark league-momentum tailwinds.
- ▲POP-1 /10 status means it re-rates on a single motivated buyer.
- ▼Same retracement and liquidity concern, amplified — at $24k with POP 1, one soft sale can reset the comp with minimal float to establish a floor.
How these picks are chosen
Core and Budget picks are drawn from Ripbin's daily eBay watcher, which tracks raw serial-numbered rookie patch and auto cards and computes an outlier-trimmed median comp for each. Conviction picks come from August 2026 market research across eBay sold listings, Card Ladder and Sports Card Investor. Starter picks are real market values from our catalog. Nothing here is a made-up number — where a comp is thin or a few weeks old, the price note says so and gives a range.
Frequently asked questions
- What are the best cheap sports cards to buy right now?
- For under $50, our August 2026 starter picks are real base rookies of ascending stars — Anthony Edwards 2020 Chronicles (~$47), Wembanyama 2023-24 Hoops Premium Stock (~$46), and Cade Cunningham 2021 Prizm (~$41) among them. They ride the same players as the pricier serial cards without the patch-auto premium.
- Are sports cards a good investment in 2026?
- They can appreciate, but they are speculative, illiquid assets — prices can fall sharply and selling takes time and fees. Our picks are the cards our data flags as most likely to hold or grow value, but this is market analysis, not financial advice. Never buy with money you cannot afford to hold for years.
- Why are new Panini cards unlicensed now?
- Panini lost the NBA license to Fanatics/Topps in October 2025 and the NFL license in spring 2026. Its 2025-26 NBA and 2025 NFL products are now airbrushed with no team logos, which makes the last fully licensed National Treasures a scarcity story and shifts new-rookie demand toward Topps products.
- How does Ripbin pick these cards?
- A daily monitor of raw eBay listings for serial-numbered rookie cards produces trimmed-median comps, and on top of that we layer a simple screen: an improving young player, a team being built around him, and a hard supply cap. Higher-tier and grail picks add fresh market research from eBay sold, Card Ladder and Sports Card Investor.
This is collectibles market analysis, not financial advice. Trading cards are speculative, illiquid assets — prices can fall sharply, selling takes time and fees, and past results don't predict future returns.
