How today’s baseball hot buys are picked

The list is drawn from the baseball targets we already watch on eBay. A listing can appear only if it is a raw, ungraded card, listed at or under $1,000, and seen on eBay within the last 36 hours; listings priced more than 65% under our comp are excluded as likely mis-listings rather than treated as the best deals on the board. We then take one card per target and at most two per player, so a single card or a single name cannot crowd out everything else.

Everything that clears those gates is scored out of 100 on five factors:

  • Value vs our comp (40) how far under our comp the listing is priced.
  • Player demand (25) monthly Google searches for the player.
  • Scarcity (15) print run and whether the card is a named parallel.
  • Liquidity (10) how many raw copies of that card are live right now.
  • Freshness (10) newly listed, or an auction ending within 24 hours.

Where the underlying prices come from is set out in our pricing methodology, and who decides what gets published in our editorial policy.

Buy It Now vs. auction

On a Buy It Now listing the price shown is the seller’s ask. There is no bidding: you pay that price, and because any other buyer can do the same, the listing can disappear a minute after you read it.

On an auction the price shown is the current bid, next to the time left and the number of bids already placed. The price you end up paying is usually higher than the one shown here, and it is not final until the auction closes. We do not bid for you.

Today’s baseball list is 9 Buy It Now listings and 1 auction.

What “our comp” means

Our comp for a card is the trimmed median of current raw asking prices for that exact card, taken from the same daily eBay pull that produces this list and blended over time so one odd listing cannot move it. It is not a sold price and it is not an appraisal — asking prices generally sit above what cards actually change hands for. The “% off” on a card is that listing measured against its comp, nothing more.

Common questions

How often does this list update?

Once a day, right after our eBay pull finishes. The “as of” time above the list is the exact moment the listings on it were last seen.

Why only raw cards?

A graded card’s price depends on the grade and on which grader assigned it, so two slabs of the same card are not the same product. Raw asking prices are comparable across sellers, which is what makes a value-vs-comp score mean anything.

Why under $1,000?

It is the range where most collectors actually buy, and the range where our comps are deepest — there are enough live raw copies to build a median from. Above it, single listings start setting the price.

Is a “hot buy” the cheapest copy?

No. Cards are ranked on all five factors, not on discount alone, so a fairly priced card of a top-demand rookie can outrank a heavily discounted one nobody is searching for. Always check other live copies before you buy.

Does Ripbin buy these too?

Our own watcher tracks the same targets, so yes — occasionally. Anything we buy is removed from the list.
